Location: Olin Theater
The “Poetry” Concert
Salem, Va.—The Roanoke College Jazz and Wind Ensembles under the direction of Dr. Joseph Blaha will present their annual joint Late Winter Concert Tuesday, March 1, in the Olin Hall Theater at 7:30 p.m. In a concert themed The “Poetry” Concert, RC Senior Amanda Wright, jazz and lead alto saxophonist with RC Jazz Ensemble, will do readings of hers and others poetry throughout the concert.
The Jazz Ensemble will perform contemporary original compositions by some of jazz’s newer voices such as Fred Sturm (“Aim High”) and Lars Halle (“Sonidos de la Calle”) as well as standards such as Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You under My Skin” featuring Nathan Price on mellophone and Dixon and Henderson’s, “Bye Bye Blackbird.” Ms. Wright will read her original poem, Jazz Birds, in the tradition of poet Langston Hughes. Improvised accompaniment will be provided of Ryan Hunt, piano, and Briell Smith, bass.
Continuing the theme of “Poetry” in the Wind Ensemble portion of the concert, Ms. Wright will perform the reading from Algernon Charles Swinburne’s Atlanta in Calydon that inspired Alfred Reed’s composition, The Hounds of Spring. Ms. Wright will also give characterization to Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s romantic poem of mystical terror, Erlking. It will be immediately followed by Blaha’s own musical interpretation entitled Goethe’s Erlking. RC Senior Rebecca Hudon will be featured as clarinet soloist in Fantasia di Concerto by Boccalari. The concert will also include Clifton Williams’ dramatic and powerful Symphonic Suite and Roland Seitz’s March Grandioso.
