Getting a Grip on Imperfection.
Is there a perfectionist's anonymous meeting nearby because I need to get to one of those meetings. Perfectionists are a bunch of worry warts. We make excuses for beginning projects and more excuses before finishing them. Do you have one in your life or are you a perfectionist? And if you do/are, how do you cope with these excuses?
- I don't have the right tools to begin.
- I have plenty of time before it is due.
- I do my best work under pressure.
- I am fearful of the outcome.
- I am afraid of what people will think of me.
These are just a few. It may sound easy to you to jump right in and do, but most perfectionists are not like that. We are afraid to take risks and we are afraid to embarrass ourselves. We are afraid of how outlandish our thoughts are and maybe afraid of not being considered normal.
Now that I am thinking about it, perfectionists are completely and totally imperfect in our rationalizations. People tilt their heads when you talk to them, sort of like your dog when it looks at you thinking, "You are absolutely crazy! Off your cob! Cuckoo! Loco! But guess what? I still love you anyway!"
And I think that is all we really need to know, is that you will love us in our strive for imperfect perfection. Just remember to tell us that when we feel stressed.
